Christmas (often written as “X-mas”)

What it is:
Christmas is celebrated every year on 25 December. It marks the birth of Jesus Christ, a central figure in Christianity. Today, it’s also celebrated worldwide as a cultural and family festival.

Why it’s called “X-mas”:

• The “X” comes from the Greek letter Chi (Χ), the first letter of Christos (Christ).
• So X-mas = Christmas, not a modern shortcut or disrespect.
